I apologize for not getting as many completed as I did the past few weeks. I had a lot happen this past week. It all started on last Friday after finishing work. While in the process of adding new images to our gallery my computer which runs PCbsd had updates that needed to be installed so I ran the updates, which were just software updates not operating system related. After the updates I started having issues so was not able to get new images for the gallery. I thought about reinstalling PC-BSD or even installing 8.1 as I was still running 8.0 but instead I put on Debian which I had already downloaded for a different computer that was also having issues with PC-BSD do to updates.
The Debian install took a long time specially on the formatting of the drive, in fact the format was not done before I went to bed. Needless to say I went to bed while it was still formatting. When I got up on Saturday it was down formatting and I finished the install. I started to configure every thing so I could work on this database but having a bit of an issue do to the screen resolution being only 800 by 600 so some pages showed images over lapping or showed the side to side scroll.
It was the images and things over lapping that were the biggest issue so I went and downloaded the Nvidia linux drivers from Nvidia’s site as I do have an Nvidia graphics card. The installer for the drivers needed the GUI (Graphical User Interface) turned off so I turned off the GUI and began the install. I got so far through the install and it said I needed a missing package. I started the GUI back up and opened the package manager and installed that package. Started the driver install again which the GUI off and again it said I needed a missing package so again I went back to the GUI and installed the missing package. This went on for a while until it got to a missing package called Kernal-Source or Kernal-Devel. I could not find this package any were in the package manager. I did a google search and did not find any thing helpful there either but did see a lot of info about a Debian based OS called Mint Linux so I downloaded and installed that one.
Mint Linux had the same Graphics issue that Debian had. The biggest issue I found with Mint Linux is I could not turn off the GUI to even begin to install the drivers. So I gave up on Mint Linux and tried a linux distro called Dream Linux which I also saw a lot of sites talking about. Dream Linux had an even bigger issue I could not even install it or do any thing with it. It would boot into the cd alright but get to the screen with the GUI and an icon to install it but nothing I clicked on responded so I restarted the computer and went back to Debian to once again see if I could get that one working. I installed all the packages I needed except for that one I could not find and went looking under all packages to see if I could find any package that is the Kernal-Source. I could not find any.
By this time I was getting Frustrated and also Sunday was almost over so basically wasted the whole weekend trying to get this working. I decided to go with a different Linux distro and this time I choose Absolute Linux. The Download for that did not get done before I went to bed on Sunday night so just left it downloading. When I got up Monday it was all done Downloading so I burned the Cd and began the install. I did not finish the install as I had to go to work.
I was not able to work on this database much at work either as I got a new computer to replace the old one, which was the other computer I had that was running PC-BSD. I spent most of the day at work setting up the new computer. When I got home I had to do Laundry so also was not able to do any thing with my home computer.
Tuesday, comes around and work was busy as it normally is at the end of the month so did not get much done with this database at work either. When I got home I finally finished the install of Absolute Linux and began the install of the Nvidia drivers and the only package it asked for this time was the Kernel-Source, which to my surprise was on the second CD that Absolute Linux has. I installed Kernel-Source off the second cd and ran the driver installer again, this time it worked. I know have my home computer back with a good resolution and no images over lapping.
Wednesday, I was able to get a little bit of the database done, mainly the one complete one that is listed above and a few new images in the gallery, it was kind of a busy day although I do not remember what all happened as it was a normal busy day.
Thursday, we had a meeting at work so was not able to get much done at work, I also ended up working late so did not get home until late so did not get much done at home except for a few more images in the gallery.
